I'm getting older, which is not fun. Still feeling great, but definitely realizing that I'm no longer young. Little things are starting to ache, but overall, I feel comfortable and confident in my body. Which I'm extremely grateful for!
But I've started looking at ways to stay strong and healthy as I continue to age. And the one thing that I'm finding extremely valuable is practicing deep squats!
What do I mean by deep squat? I'm talking about heels on the ground, feet facing forward or slightly turned outward, and knees fully bent, putting your posterior right next to the ground.
Many people can't do a deep squat, primarily because modern conveniences, jobs, and lifestyles put us in chairs all day! But the deep squat is something that humans have been doing for ages, and it's a body position that keeps you healthy because it uses the full range of motion for many parts of your body.
Many cultures still squat regularly; it's mostly Western countries that have lost the ability. So if you're reading this in English, I'm probably talking about you!
Every day I squat while I brush my teeth. That gives me a good 3 to 6 minutes of squatting each day, exercising my joints and muscles, and helping my body remember it is allowed to safely move like that. I've felt the little aches and pains that have started to build up in my back, knee, and hips start to go away. Even a persistent pain in my hip that I've had for the last decade caused by walking up moderate hills is now almost completely gone!
There are other added benefits too, like being comfortable squatting when you're tired of walking or standing and no chairs are around. You might get some funny looks, but at least you'll be able to rest and be comfortable wherever you are!
